REPOST by Alexis S. 1008 Days Quit Date Unknow

Thinking back to the beginning of my quit, I can't even think as to why I quit. I knew that I felt blah all the time, but didn't know if it was from smoking, or that I was getting ready to turn 60.  Is quitting hard?   It depends. It depends on you.  I can tell you that I have lived with a smoker since the beginning of my quit, or I can say I have lived with an available supply of cigarettes since my quit, or both.  Either way I still quit because neither affected my quit, because when I quit, I quit smoking… so why would they affect me?

Was it easy?   No, but survivable.   I read on here how people can't enjoy the things they did while smoking.  Why not?  Nothing changed except the fact that you don't have a death stick in your hand.  I read people saying over and over that they want a smoke.  Why when you don't smoke?  We set our quits up to fail sometimes because we give the smokes too much power in our lives.  We say that we don't think we can do it forever.  Forever may be tomorrow, so can't you do it for today?

I have a hard time after 235 days, of remembering how rough the first few weeks were, but I can tell you how painful the kidney stone that I had 4 years ago felt.  Our quits don't need to be painful, maybe uncomfortable for a little while, but not painful.   I learned quickly that if I told myself that I didn't smoke, then the thought of smoking didn't cross my mind.  Don't get me wrong, I still had craves, or what I called zombie mind, anxiety feelings, nervousness, insomnia, etc., but each day they lessen and they weren't that painful.

The 1st few days I had to keep my hands super busy, but by the end of the week things were improving.  My advice to those who are struggling, or those who are repeat quitters, is to… from day one… tell yourself that you don't smoke.  If you have to shout it out, which I did driving to the store one day, then do it…  Our minds react to what we put in them… If we keep telling ourselves that we want something, then eventually we will get it, but if we keep telling ourselves that we don't need it, the desire goes away…

The saying "Mind Over Matter" has a lot of truth to it, when it comes to a successful quit.   I'm sure that those who are only a few days or a month into their quits are saying, “Easy to say when you have 235 smoke free days.”  Honestly though, I felt this way since the beginning. Read my posts.  I tried to be positive from the beginning, because I know from past experiences in other parts of my life, that when I am negative… that it draws me down…  We are only as strong as we allow ourselves to be…  When we whine and moan about how bad our lives are, or our quit is, then we can't rise above the level that we are at…

We need to dig in and fight and rise above that level, even if it is just to the next level, but don't let your “stinking thinking” keep you smoking the stinking sticks!  I can definitely attest that the blah feeling, that I had, is gone!  And that I am now 60 yrs. old!  Don't look at your quit as giving up something that you like or love, but gaining your whole life and being!  KYQ and NOPE...   Is attainable, but only if you are willing!
