4 years quit: “What advice do you offer a brand-new quitter?”

I waited with doing this post a bit so I could enjoy the party hat and confetti a bit longer as it’s only once a year now. A small price to pay for a life of freedom from stupid lying killing smoking.

I’m pretty sure my quit is pretty safe. In the last 4 years I’ve seen all triggers pass, happy ones, sad ones, hungry, angry, lonely, tired ones. Life and death ones. I’m not triggered by it no more. Quitting was the smartest thing I did in my life. I learned so much about myself and about life by quitting and keeping my quit.

I’m still here. I can only keep what I have by giving it away (stealing this one from NA). I feel at home here. People understand me and I understand a lot of what people are saying, wherever they are in their quits. I still learn from everybody and if I can give something back from what I was given we all win.

We do quitting together here. And that makes all the difference. Really. I am sure my quit would not have succeeded if I didn’t find this site on day 2 of my quit. The shared strength and wisdom here are enormous. There is huge power in our numbers. Learning to ask for help has been of the utmost importance in keeping my quit, as well as in other parts of my life. Still learning that lesson too BTW.

NOPE ODAAT is the only rule that truly matters. We’re addicts and we never can have another puff. Which is totally fine. Who in his right mind would willingly put a paper tube filled with leaves in his mouth, light it, and inhale the burning toxic cacogenic fumes as deep as they could into their precious lungs? Or mimic this by using some electronic device? NOPE is the way and it’s the only way. Being quit is not a punishment, we don’t deprive ourselves of anything by refraining from smoking. We lose nothing and we win all by practicing NOPE.

Be happy you are quit. Be proud you are quit. Celebrate the freedom your quit gives you. I do. I celebrate my 4 years today and I’m NEVER going back. Love from Amsterdam. Smoke free, sober & clean. The way life is supposed to be I think. Have a great smoke free life all!
PS. My special shout and love to my Quitbud @Jay B. Forever grateful friend.
